Killer Weekend: On the river

by

Want to know how to mix a little adventure with relaxation? Take a river rafting float trip and bring along some good friends and good food. That’s how.

1) River menu

Just because you’re out in the middle of nowhere doesn’t mean you have to eat like it. Nothing makes camp more comfortable than cooking up a good meal. Things like hummus, fresh vegetables, chips, yogurt, granola, fruit and smoked salmon all make great mid-day snacks, but when it’s time for dinner pasta, sloppy joes, salads and sweet desserts are the way to go.

2) Peaceful warrior

You don’t have to be a yogi master to enjoy some sun salutations on the water. A sleeping pad can easily double as a yoga mat, or even just a place to sit and take it all in. Early mornings are best. Savor the peace before anyone else gets up.

3) Get up, stand up

Stand up paddle boards are a terrific addition to any float trip. Not only are they great core exercise, but they are also a unique way to add a little spice to your adventure.

4) Exploration

After some river miles, it’s refreshing to stretch the legs and get out and explore the environment you’re floating through. Rivers are fed by tributaries, and trails often lead to rewarding places up canyons and arroyos.

5) Hearth warming

Make sure you have plenty of wood for the fire. Campfires are a gathering place to share stories, makes plans, and just sit in the quiet. They are hypnotic. A magical place for tired minds to find rest, and chilly bones to get warm. A nice fire will always steal the show.
