Killer Weekend

Killer Weekend: Page

Deserts, canyons and barb-b-que

This small Arizona town is a hub of adventure, from the second-biggest man-made lake in the U.S. to a lifetime of desert exploration.

1) Take a dip

Lake Powell is 190 miles in length, with nearly 100 canyons making up its peculiar shape. There are few roads, so a boat is the way to go, from ski boat to house boat. Although the lake sits at 3,700 feet, water temperatures warm to almost 80 degrees in summer, and while some areas can become crowded, it's easy to get away - the lake has more shoreline than the entire west coast of the United States.

2) Slot machine

Page is surrounded by a number of slot canyons, and wind and water are the culprits. Antelope Canyon is so unimaginably surreal, it's one of the most photographed places in the world.

3) Take a pano

Horseshoe Bend is another must-see-to-believe formation, this time cut by the Colorado River. Hikers can veer out 1,000 feet down to the river as it curls 180 degrees around the massive sandstone buttress it formed.

4) Meet Big John

“We never knew this was going to happen,” said Big John of Big John's Texas BBQ in Page. He started out with his own backyard recipe and took starting cooking out of a mobile smoker and trailer. Today, the aroma of their brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs floats over Page from their location at a historic gas station in town, where they smoke their meats right out front.

5) Catch the wave

Get in line for this one, only 10 people are allowed in at once, and that's if you win a lottery drawing the day before. Located in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, this unmarked sandstone landscape bends the mind and leaves some people feeling dizzy as they rise and fall over wind-sculpted dunes composed of layers of color. There are no paths through, just trails leading to the area, adding to the wandering feel of exploration.
